At FlexTrades, we believe that a strong company culture and meaningful connections are the backbone of our success. Since transitioning to a fully remote workforce, we’ve made it a priority to continually nurture our team’s sense of community and collaboration, regardless of the distance between us. In this blog, we’ll share the strategies and initiatives that help us maintain a thriving culture, foster team engagement, and ensure that every employee feels connected to one another while working remotely.

One of the biggest drivers of this initiative is our Enjoy the Journey Committee. This volunteer group of employees works to create fun and informative experiences for FlexTrades employees year-round. The group meets monthly to plan events and meetings, often centered around monthly or seasonal themes. For February, events will focus on the Superbowl, Valentine’s Day, American Heart Month, National Cancer Prevention Month, and more. In March, there are already learning sessions planned around National Nutrition Month.

The best example of a larger event hosted by the Enjoy the Journey Committee was our annual virtual holiday party. To celebrate, the team sent packages to each employee containing a variety of charcuterie board ingredients and paired beverages to try. We then celebrated during a virtual meeting, where trained sommeliers guided us through the essentials of wine tasting and how to combine the various taste elements of charcuterie for the best flavor experience.

While these events are great, sometimes nothing beats genuine face-to-face connection. That’s why we’ve created at least one day a month where employees can plan to work in person at our new office in Hudson, Wisconsin! Employees are welcome to work in the office whenever they want or need to do so. However, having one planned day each month where people know others will be there to collaborate or simply add some conversation to the workday makes a big difference.

Facing the challenges of fostering connection and company culture through a remote workforce has required a lot of ingenuity from FlexTrades leadership, management, and the Enjoy the Journey Committee. But it’s all worth it to ensure that employees are given plenty of opportunities to connect beyond their computer screens. We at FlexTrades feel as though our efforts are pushing the boundaries of remote work capabilities with this initiative, and we can’t wait to continue redefining what’s possible for both production and people in a remote work environment.

Community. It’s a word that gets used a lot in the news, in corporate statements, at local events, everywhere. But what does it really mean? The dictionary will tell you that a community is a group of people living in the same place, having a particular characteristic in common, or otherwise feeling fellowship with others because of shared attitudes, interests, and goals. Here at FlexTrades, community includes not only the people we work with, but the personal connections we make with them outside of work.

FlexTrades’ mission is to make a difference every day for everyone: clients, employees, and the communities we call home. Most of the time we make that difference in ways that are fun to celebrate. We help clients conquer challenges, customers achieve goals, and employees succeed professionally. But sometimes the biggest difference can be made by simply offering a helping hand when it’s required the most.

Here’s a story about a member of our community who needed support and the grassroots effort to make sure he and his family got just that.

We first connected with Brian Warren years ago. He’s the Program Coordinator for the Precision Machining Engineering Technology program at Meridian Community College in Mississippi. Brian saw one of our job postings online and promptly reached out to schedule an employer presentation for his upcoming graduates. That’s the kind of thing Brian does for his students, the “extra” stuff.

Over the two decades he’s led Meridian’s machining program, he has done so many of those extra things. Brian connects his students with employers. Not just locally, but truly on a national scale, to open their eyes to the larger opportunities machining can create for them. He encourages students to build skills beyond the machine, like networking, to help advance the prospects of the industry and their personal careers. And Brian works tirelessly to help ensure underrepresented student populations find a home in machining, too. Given all of that, it should be no surprise that his program produces excellent machinists and programmers who have made a real difference for their community and American manufacturing.

That kind of commitment, vision, and give-first attitude is why we love working with Brian. It’s also why we felt compelled to find a way to give back to Brian when his family received news that turned their world upside down.

In early fall of 2023, a lump began to develop on the right arm of Brian’s then 2-year-old son, Jake. Originally, this lump was misdiagnosed as non-cancerous. But right before Christmas last year, the Warren family learned that young Jake was actually suffering from a pediatric cancer known as Ewing Sarcoma. Jake’s arm and life were both at risk, and his parents, Brian and Marsha, were thrown into chaos.

Jake was facing surgery, to begin 2024, followed by 16 weeks of chemo. Marsha had to resign from her job as a Licensed Practical Nurse to care for Jake and stay with him during weeklong stays in the hospital, hours away from home, for treatment. And Brian was left to hold things together as best he could while putting thousands of miles on his vehicle to and from the hospital all while continuing to support his students on their path to graduation. The mental and physical anguish experienced in such a scenario is obvious, but the financial burden incurred while pursuing cancer treatment is also overwhelming.

Brian and his family needed help and their network, including FlexTrades, rallied to the cause.

Members of our ReTool team work closely with technical program instructors across America and have come to know Brian very well over the years. When they learned of Jake’s diagnosis, they immediately brought the news to our attention and the question was asked, “What can we do to help?” The obvious answer was to attempt to raise as much money as possible.

Originally, Jake’s treatment plan was expected to be around 5 to 6 months. After responding well to chemo and a surgery that also went well, the Warrens thought they would learn that Jake was cancer free. Those hopes were dashed when they were told in a post-operation appointment that two small sarcomas yet remained in Jake’s arm. Now the treatment plan has been reset and will extend, at minimum, into early 2025.

FlexTrades has a core value of “Give Back.” We’ve been successful fundraisers for everything from bicycle donations to school supply drives to supporting Special Olympics. Because of this, we knew we could help this family in our manufacturing community, as well, but how?

Since we were looking to take a big slice out of the Warren family’s financial burden, we decided to throw a pizza party to share this mission one slice at a time with the manufacturing community across our home base of Minnesota. That’s when Pizza for Pediatric Cancer Support was born, now we just needed some partners.

We found our first partner in FlexTrades’ Leadership Team when they immediately supported this event and donated prizes to promote early registration. Our next partner was The Pointe in Prior Lake, Minnesota. They’re an official shuttle location for our annual Polar Plunge fundraiser to support the Special Olympics, and they host our work team every year. The Pointe was our first call to host, and they didn’t hesitate to jump in with both feet to support this cause. They donated the location, servers, and sodas while also giving us a deal on pizzas in an effort to maximize fundraising dollars.

Now that we had an event and a location, we needed participants. Our Marketing team created an Eventbrite site to capture digital registrations for the event while also launching several email and social media campaigns to generate awareness and interest. Our Sales team made our clients aware of the cause and offered to cover the cost of attendance for any who were local to Minnesota. And our Technical Recruiting and Project Success teams made the same offer to any of our technicians on active assignments local to the Minnesota area. Finally, our Give Back Committee got the fundraising started with a grant from our charitable budget.

With a plan in place, a date set, and all our team members working together, we were excited to gather in support of such a worthy cause. But we didn’t know yet how big of a difference we could make. When the morning of June 22 arrived, so did our event team. With signs and t-shirts in hand, they transformed a corner of the event space into a mobile exhibit telling Jake’s story, inviting onlookers to learn more. Bartenders even offered to display a tip jar to help raise funds while the event was in progress.

And what an event it was!

We ended the day with close to 100 registration tickets purchased and dozens of in-person attendees. Co-workers shared hugs, laughs, and a few tears. Local diners, unconnected to our event, were inspired to donate to the cause, as well. And, as a side benefit, many corporate employees got to meet some of our traveling skilled trades professionals face to face for the first time. One of our welders even brought his entire family simply to be a part of supporting another family connected to manufacturing.

It was a wonderful day and it ended with a great result. When all the funds and donations were counted, our efforts raised more than $2,000 for Jake and his family! We’re grateful for all the help we received in our endeavor to assist the Warrens, but their struggles aren’t over yet.

Jake’s GoFundMe (embedded below) has raised over $50,000 to date, but that’s only half of what they are expecting to need before their journey ends.

If you would like to help us continue to assist the Warren family, please feel free to donate whatever you can. Every penny raised will no doubt make a tremendous difference for Jake and his family.

Here at FlexTrades, we take our corporate core values seriously because they help us achieve our mission of making a difference in the communities where we work and live. All six of our values are aimed at making a difference, but it’s our commitment to Giving Back that most directly showcases the impact our other core values allow us to make where it’s needed most. To celebrate all the good we were able to give back to others in 2023, we’d like to shine a month-by-month spotlight on a year of giving back!

A Year of Giving FlexTrades' Journey Through 2023's Charitable Milestones

At its core, giving back means providing help without the expectation of return. We want our success to help others be more successful. Through personal channels, we learned that a local high school ski team was in need of a trailer for their gear. We understand the importance of technical equipment and simple solutions, so FlexTrades donated a trailer to the team.

February

We love giving in all its forms, but our favorite kind of giving is the kind that keeps the giving growing. That’s why FlexTrades has sponsored a corporate Polar Plunge Team for the past six years and counting. Plunging is a fun and rewarding team experience, and it supports a terrific organization in Special Olympics. Our plunges provide funds to ensure that Special Olympic athletes can pursue their personal greatness without worrying about cost or accessibility. FlexTrades plunges have raised more than $20,000 to date and have become an annual tradition.

March

For most schools and training programs around America, career fair season starts in March. It’s not a coincidence then that our sponsorship of hiring events around the country starts at the same time (and runs throughout the year, too). We believe in the importance of technical education, and we want those pursuing such training to know how they are important to the future of our industry. We provide financial support and employment opportunities through more than a dozen virtual and in-person events every year alongside information and collateral to help students prepare for industry work with any employer.

April

We started the year intending to give more structure to our charitable efforts as a business, and by April, our Give Back Committee was officially chartered and began developing programs to support the altruistic efforts of our corporate employees, technicians and clients. This committee has already allowed us to diversify our impact and mobilize our ability to help quickly in times of crisis. We can’t wait to see what this committee makes possible with a full year ahead of it in 2024.

May

Many CrossFit gyms around America hold Murph events as competitions and fundraisers around Memorial Day. A member of our corporate team works out at a gym that held its Murph event in support of the Step Up Foundation. Our teammate asked how we could help support her participation, and FlexTrades became an event sponsor to help Step Up continue to address the ever-growing suicide epidemic within our military veteran population.

June

FlexTrades attended SkillsUSA Nationals for the first time. Our goal was to bring exposure to a great organization helping to support the skilled trades. The result was that we got to meet the next generation of the trades face to face. We were blown away by the young people we met, and we’re even more excited for the future of manufacturing than we were before attending. Giving back is always great, but we especially love it when it gives us hope in return!

July

We believe in advocating for your industry, and we try hard to provide people in the skilled trades with tools to make that easier. That’s part of the reason why we created our own activity book for kids. We want them to be able to see themselves in the trades, and we want to provide those who work with youth tools that make that possible. Throughout 2023, we gave out hundreds of activity books through our on-site appearances and through our technical education partners.

August

We held our annual all-company meeting/summer party this August. We worked. We learned. We had fun. But we also made sure to make time to give back. During the party we set time aside so our entire corporate team could help Wine to Water prepack hygiene packs. Wine to Water works to preserve life and dignity around the world through the power of clean water. Through our efforts, hundreds of additional people will have access to basic hygiene while dealing with a water related disaster or emergency.

A Year of Giving FlexTrades' Journey Through 2023's Charitable Milestones (2)

The Hana Mohammad Scholarship Golf Tournament began in 2022. FlexTrades has been an event sponsor from the start and 2023 marked the second year of our support for this impactful event. This tournament is held to honor the memory of a wonderful educator and funds raised directly support Beacons of Influence. This organization raises, manages, and distributes resources to support, enhance and promote the educational opportunities technical colleges offer in and around Minnesota.

October

While preparing for an upcoming office relocation, we found quite a lot of PMG swag still hanging around. Attempting to make all that unusable (for our purposes) swag make the biggest difference possible, we partnered with Joseph’s Coat to deliver hundreds of new and unused clothing, outerwear, and other essential goods like toiletry bags to those most in need.

A Year of Giving FlexTrades' Journey Through 2023's Charitable Milestones (1400 x 2000 px)

Several members of our Technical Recruiting Team used their VTO (voluntary time off) hours to volunteer at Feed My Starving Children. Every employee has access to VTO hours to make a difference in their community annually without having to work “around” work. The work this team did will ensure that many people experiencing food insecurity around the world will have the nutrition needed to get through another day.

December

A member of our corporate team recently received some unexpected health news. Dealing with these challenges will require this employee to miss a lot of work in the coming months. This news is scary enough for anyone to receive. But adding the non-health worries that come along with missed work creates even more complications for our teammate. Luckily, we have the ability to donate PTO to our coworkers here at FlexTrades. In less than two weeks, almost 70 hours of PTO have been donated!

2024?

These aren’t the only ways we gave back in 2023, but they are some excellent examples of the charitable initiatives we support throughout the year. We can’t wait to see what kind of difference we can make in 2024 and beyond!

At the dawn of 2023, I found myself in the position of so many Americans – being laid off and facing unemployment. This juncture brought with it a mix of apprehension about the unknown, hope for a brighter future and a myriad of questions: Could I have done something differently? What lies ahead? Is my hard-earned success at risk?

As a single-income household, the full weight of life’s challenges suddenly bore down on me. In the weeks after my layoff, I channeled my energy into alleviating my mental and emotional strain. I sought solace and strength in the support of friends, family, and neighbors, who uplifted me with their presence and reminded me of my greatness.

Realizing the importance of a clear and positive mindset, I embarked on a journey to discover the endless opportunities ahead of me. To fully embrace this new chapter, it was essential to be in a mindset of abundance and readiness for growth, both personally and professionally. Rather than hastily applying to numerous jobs in a state of panic, I chose to reflect deeply on myself. This introspective journey led me to identify my core personal values – the fundamental principles that have steered my life’s course.

These values became the foundation of my job search, ultimately guiding me to a role that resonated deeply with my core beliefs. Just 67 days post-layoff, I found myself in an interview, engaging in discussions deeply rooted in the prospective company’s values.

Now, having been part of the FlexTrades Team for nearly eight months, I’ve observed how the company’s ethos is intricately integrated into every facet of our work – from emails and events to projects and daily interactions. Here, values are more than mere words. They are the essence of our collective spirit. I am both grateful and proud to contribute to a team that earnestly lives its principles.

Let me share a snapshot of FlexTrades’ Values and how they manifest in our everyday operations – a source of inspiration for both individuals and businesses.

Move the Line

We challenge ourselves and move the line every day, in everything we do. We push your own boundaries by focusing on outcomes and incremental improvement. We are forward-thinking. We embrace change and innovation. We make mistakes. We deliver results.

From finding new and better ways to amplify the FlexTrades message to offering incentivized referral programs to our technicians, all teams have the opportunity to move the line at FlexTrades. We embrace change and innovation by using available tools and technology, like AI, to support our greatest efforts in moving the company forward.

Be the Next

We strive to set the highest standard of quality in everything we do. We always want to drive towards “the NEXT” great thing by constantly challenging ourselves to improve and break new ground. We pursue growth.

FlexTrades invested in updating its tech stack to provide the team with the latest tools and technologies that support growth. This includes Bullhorn, an applicant tracking system and operations software; and HubSpot, a contact relationship management software. Various teams use AI to push their projects to the next level and Microsoft Teams helps us be a highly collaborative virtual workforce.

Elevate Others

We lift up our teammates, technicians, customers and neighbors, with confidence, positivity, and graciousness. We respect others.

From thank you’s and shoutouts through our company shared Teams channel to how we communicate with our client partners and technicians, elevating others is an everyday occurrence at FlexTrades. On a bigger scale, every quarter FlexTrades employees have the opportunity to nominate their colleagues for the Employee of the Quarter Award. Each quarter, six winners are selected representing each of FlexTrades’ Values and are given a celebration package thoughtfully curated by HR.

Pull the Wagon

Winning takes teamwork, ambition and diligence, not egos. We pitch in and do whatever it takes to move the company forward. Our leaders pull the wagon alongside the team. We promote teamwork.

Everyone from the newest member of the team to FlexTrades’ CEO, Amy Grussing, who has been a part of the team for nearly 20 years is dedicated to moving the company forward together. From quarterly Town Hall meetings to cross-functional collaborative projects, leadership at FlexTrades has created an open environment, where all ideas and feedback are welcome and encouraged.

Enjoy the Journey

We take the time to stop and acknowledge where we came from so that we don’t miss how impressive the climb has been. We never turn down a reason to celebrate. We get a lot done and have fun along the way. We have fun, seriously.

FlexTrades holds a Summer Picnic in July where we gather to align on company goals, participate in teambuilding activities and celebrate our hard work. We put our game-faces on for weekly and holiday themed virtual Trivia Games, and there’s dedicated time spent in our quarterly town halls to celebrate individual and collective accomplishments.

Give Back

We give back to the communities where we live and work through volunteering and charitable donations. We believe that when we do good, we feel good and make our world a better place. We give back.

There is a dedicated Give Back Committee that supports the FlexTrades team in participating in charitable events, making company backed donations to local charities, and partnering with our clients on charitable endeavors close to their hearts. For the last 5 years (and counting), FlexTrades employees have donated and participated in the annual Polar Plunge® for Special Olympics.  At this year’s Summer Picnic we partnered with Wine to Water, a non-profit charity organization that helps provide clean water resources for areas in need, to make hundreds of care packages.
